Alex Genest's stunning run at the Barcelona International Athletics Meeting highlighted an outstanding weekend of action for the Speed River Track and Field Club. Genest shattered his lifetime best by nearly eight seconds in the 3000 metre steeplechase recording a time 8 minutes 19.33 seconds. Genest's performance bettered the "A" standard for the World Championships and was third fastest in Canadian history.

Speed River teammate Rachel Aubry also had a personal best performance in Barcelona running 2 minutes 3.21 seconds over the 800 metres. In the men's 1500 metres Kyle Boorsma ran 3 minutes 41.78 seconds to finish 9th overall in the men's "b" section, while teammate Taylor Milne was clipped 300 metres into the men's "a" section resulting in a hard fall that took him out of the race. Milne is still in pursuit of his own World Championships "A" standard and will be back in action next Friday in Stockholm. Genest will race Wednesday in Joensuu, Finland. Boorsma and Aubry will be racing Saturday in Ghent, Belgium along with teammates Dana Buchanan and Meredith MacGregor.

In other action this weekend Ross Proudfoot finished fifth overall in the men's 1500 metres at the Pan American Junior Track and Field Championships. Teammates Carise Thompson and Emily Driedger finished sixth and seventh respectively in the women's 5000.
